Recent crime alert canceled
A resident of Alice Lloyd residence hall told police Sept. 6 that he found the wallet he had reported stolen from his room the day before. The resident had told police Sept. 5 that he had fallen asleep with the door open around 3 p.m. When he awoke around 5:45 p.m., he noticed his wallet was missing. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) canceled Crime Alert 2010-13 that had been issued to notify the community of the burglary.
North Campus sexual assault investigation continues
University police continue to investigate a report of a sexual assault of a child on North Campus in early August. The child’s parents contacted DPS Aug. 3 to file a complaint. Reportedly an unknown man, who appeared to be performing maintenance and was carrying tools, approached two young children outside playing in the 1300 block of McIntyre. He groped one child before walking away. Both children are younger than 6 years old.
A reward of up to $500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man. Information about the incident can be provided anonymously by calling U-M’s Anonymous TIP LINE at 800-863-1355. Or call DPS directly at 734-763-1131.
The man was described as dark-skinned, with a bald head, thin mustache and muscular build. He was wearing a light blue shirt, worn jeans shorts and black tennis shoes. He also may have a tattoo.
No leads in attempted robbery on the Diag
An Ann Arbor man told DPS Aug. 3 that he had been assaulted by four men on the Diag the previous day. Additionally, one of the men demanded his wallet, but threw it back at the victim after he couldn’t find any money in it. The victim sought medical treatment at an urgent care clinic on Maple Road the next day. However, during a follow-up interview with the victim a week later, he changed his story. In the second report, he said he had purchased a small amount of marijuana from a man on the Diag Aug. 2, when the seller suddenly began punching him and knocked him down. The investigation was closed due to lack of leads.
Visitor reports assault, fails to follow up
A 33-year-old Ann Arbor man told police Aug. 20 that he had been assaulted around 3 a.m. on the Diag by three unknown men. The man, who had visible facial injuries, was taken to the U-M Hospital for treatment. Several attempts to contact the man for follow-up investigation have failed.
Father pleads guilty to child abuse
A resident of Northwood Community Apartments pleaded guilty Aug. 18 to two counts of fourth-degree child abuse. Gibeum Kim was accused of repeatedly striking his two young children with a baseball bat on Aug. 9. The children were treated and released at the U-M Hospital for significant bruises. Kim is scheduled for sentencing Sept. 14.
Laptops missing from EECS lab
Three laptop computers were reported missing Aug. 17 from a laboratory in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building. A student employee told DPS that his laptop and two department laptops were taken between 8:30-10:30 p.m. He was certain the lab doors had been shut and locked.
Former employee charged with computer crimes
A former house officer in the U-M Health System (UMHS) Department of Pathology was arraigned Aug. 31 on 19 felony counts stemming from a police investigation that began April 2009.
Eric Batterson, a former Medical School resident, was released on personal recognizance bond and his preliminary exam is scheduled for Sept. 29. He is charged with nine counts of illegal/unauthorized computer access (punishable by five years in jail and/or a $10,000 penalty), nine counts of use of a computer to commit a crime (seven years in jail and/or $5,000) and one count of possession of a taser (four years and/or $2,000).
He is accused of unauthorized access to computer files in the Medical School and UMHS by using a “key logger” (a device that captures keystrokes) to capture passwords. He also reportedly accessed colleagues e-mail files, changed performance evaluations and cheated on tests. Batterson resigned from the program in April 2009.
Suspect arrested in CCRB incident
A 41-year-old Ann Arbor man was arrested Aug. 25 in connection with an incident April 15 at the Central Campus Recreation Building. Xiao Dong Guo was arraigned Aug. 25 on one count of aggravated indecent exposure. He was released on personal recognizance bond and is scheduled for a preliminary exam on Sept. 29. Guo is accused of entering a sauna about 10:55 p.m. April 15, exposing himself to a sauna occupant and then masturbating. DPS Crime Alert 2010-06 has been canceled as a result of Guo’s arrest.
