With the North Campus population now greater than 4,000 — larger than ever before — the university has launched an initiative to amplify the vibrancy of the burgeoning community.
U-M is counting on faculty and staff to be ambassadors helping to communicate the enhanced offerings, which include more social events, increased class sessions and extended hours of bus service.
More than 250 additional students, of which 230 are freshman, are assigned to housing on North Campus this fall. The university has converted a portion of the Northwood III apartments into a first-year community. Called Northwood Houses, the newly purposed suites will house only freshmen and residence staff, and have been met with welcome anticipation by students and parents.
In addition, LSA has scheduled some of its popular undergraduate classes on North Campus as a pilot to determine student interest in taking classes there.
To accommodate the additional traffic from increased occupancy and class frequency, the university is extending the hours it offers bus service to and from North Campus.
The Northwood Express will start at 7:35 a.m., an hour earlier than previous years, to accommodate students with 8 a.m. classes. And the Diag-to-Diag Express will run several hours longer in the evening, with a bus running every 10 minutes until shortly after 10 p.m., to transport students and others in the university community with late classes, meetings and events on the North Campus Diag. The university is encouraging those who don’t live on North Campus to use the Diag-to-Diag Express to get the most direct trip to the North Campus Diag.
The university also is increasing the number of activities planned on North Campus this fall and will showcase those activities and other news on the website www.umich.edu/~gonorth.
Activities planned in September include a tailgate for the Notre Dame football game on Sept. 11 on the North Campus Diag and a late-night UMix Rock the Night party with music and food from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Sept. 24 at Pierpont Commons. The events are open to all members of the university community and their families.
