Awards

Rosina Bierbaum, dean of the School of Natural Resources and Environment, has received a Distinguished Service Citation from the Ecological Society of America for her service to the scientific community, her ecological work in the public interest, and her effective advocacy for the application of sound ecological science to a wide range of environmental problems. The society noted Bierbaum’s work as a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, among other contributions.

School of Nursing Dean Kathleen Potempa recently was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane letters degree from SUNY College of Health Related Professions and the College of Nursing. Potempa also addressed the school’s graduates at Carnegie Hall, New York City.

Medical School students Alan Chu, Nicholas Dewyer and Erin Gillespie are among 116 medical, dental and veterinary students from 47 schools across the country recently selected to perform research through a $4 million Howard Hughes Medical Institute initiative. The initiative gives students an opportunity to immerse themselves in science and consider whether they want to pursue a career as a physician-scientist.

Barry Checkoway, a School of Social Work professor and founder of the Ginsberg Center, recently won the national Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award, presented by Campus Compact for public service through scholarship. During the 1990s Checkoway worked with the Clinton Administration to help design the national AmeriCorps program.
