Two veterans, two stories, one summit

Two veterans from different eras and branches of the service have brought UM-Flint together with not-for-profit VetBizCentral to educate veterans and provide information to help them succeed in business. The Summit for Entrepreneurship and Veterans’ Benefits is planned for 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the William S. White Building, UM-Flint.

Jack Helmuth, a Vietnam-era Navy veteran and Dean of the School of Management, has worked to develop entrepreneurship programs for students, veterans, local businesses and community members. Matt Sherwood, assistant director of VetBizCentral, and a disabled Army veteran who served in Germany, Panama and Kuwait, has worked to serve the Flint veterans community by seeking to alert veterans of their benefits, which can help them succeed in business.

The summit will provide information about benefits and a series of short seminars and panel discussions on personal finance, how to fund a business, accounting and legal issues and more.

Registration for the event is $5 in advance, $10 at the door, and is open to both veterans as well as community members interested in entrepreneurship and issues important to small businesses. Register in advance at www.vetbizsales.org. Registration is limited to the first 120 to sign-up.

The event is hosted by the School of Management’s Michigan Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and VetBizCentral.
