Awards
Dr. Asheesh Bedi, assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery, Medical School, recently earned the Neer Award from the American Shoulder and Elbow Society for outstanding shoulder surgery research. Bedi, a surgeon with the U-M Health System sports medicine program MedSport, investigated the effect of diabetes on tendon-to-bone healing after rotator cuff repair surgery. His findings will help physicians as they manage the care of insulin-resistant and diabetic patients.
James R. Barber, professor of mechanical engineering and applied mechanics, has been selected to receive the 2010 American Society for Engineering Education Archie Higdon Distinguished Educator Award, presented annually by the Mechanics Division for distinguished and outstanding contributions to engineering mechanics education. The award is presented at the Mechanics Division Banquet at the society’s annual conference.
Trachette Jackson, professor in the Department of Mathematics, has been chosen to receive the 2010 Blackwell-Tapia Prize, awarded every second year in honor of the legacy of David Blackwell and Richard Tapia, two mathematical scientists who have inspired students and professionals in the mathematical sciences. It recognizes a mathematical scientist who has contributed and continues to contribute significantly to research. Jackson’s research is in applications of mathematics to the biomedical sciences.
Elected
Dr. Claire Duvernoy has been elected Michigan governor to the American College of Cardiology. She will assume the three-year governorship in March 2011 after serving a one year governor-elect period. Duvernoy is the chief of cardiology at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, director of the Women’s Heart Program at U-M and associate professor of internal medicine at the Medical School.
