Don’t miss: Latino Culture Show produced by students

The ninth edition of the Latino Culture Show, a celebration program produced by U-M students that marks the end of the academic cycle, is at 7 p.m. Friday at Lydia Mendelssohn Theater.

The program will include dance, music, poetry and drama representing Latino/a culture in the United States and in the 22 Latin American countries. Students have designed choreography for rumba, bachata, cumbia and salsa. Musical performers Grupo Aye from Grand Rapids will begin the program.

The purpose of The Latino Culture Show is to provide a space for analysis, critique and growth of culture and also share with the community a more nuanced portrait of Latino/a culture breaking stereotypes, organizers say.

Bierbaum presents Cantor lecture on climate change

Rosina Bierbaum, dean of the School of Natural Resources and the Environment and co-director of the World Development Report 2010: Development and Climate Change, presents the 7th Annual Nancy Cantor Distinguished lectureship of Intellectual Diversity at 10 a.m.-noon Tuesday at the Michigan League Vandenberg Room.

Bierbaum will discuss how climate change threatens all countries, particularly developing nations, which could bear nearly 80 percent of the costs of damages resulting from the changing climate. This lecture explores actions designed to reduce vulnerability, help nations cope with new risks and lay the groundwork for a transition to low-carbon growth that is imperative for both developed and developing countries.

The Cantor Lectureship was established in 2001 to commemorate former Provost Nancy Cantor’s contributions to the social and intellectual well-being of the university. Administered by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the lectureship honors her legacy by bringing prominent national figures to campus to stimulate continuing discourse on issues surrounding intellectual diversity on higher education.
