Three members of the College of Engineering have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
They are Don B. Chaffin, the G. Lawton and Louise G. Johnson Professor of Engineering and professor of industrial and operations engineering; Elmer G. Gilbert, professor of aerospace engineering and of electrical engineering and computer science; and George I. Haddad, the Robert J. Hiller Professor of Engineering and professor of electrical engineering and computer science.
Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors an engineer can receive and is limited to those who have made “important contributions to engineering theory and practice and those who have demonstrated unusual accomplishment in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology.” Seventy-nine new members were elected this year, bringing total U.S. membership to 1,732.
Other U-M faculty members of the National Academy of Engineering include Peter M. Banks, Lynn A. Conway, James J. Duderstadt, Gerard M. Faeth, Robert D. Hanson, Emmett N. Leith, Frank E. Richart, Chen-To Tai, Walter J. Weber Jr., and Chia-Shun Yih.
