Nineteen faculty members will be honored for their teaching, research, service and creative activities at a banquet Monday (Oct. 5).
Two will receive the Amoco Foundation Faculty Teaching Awards, which recognize “demonstrated excellence in instruction at the undergraduate level.”
This award, carrying a $1,000 stipend, will be presented to Bruce H. Karnopp, associate professor of mechanical engineering and applied mechanics, and Roy J. Nelson, professor of French.
Five will receive the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, which carries a $1,500 stipend and recognizes “extraordinary achievement in teaching, research, creative work in the arts, public service and other activities that have brought the University distinction.”
They are: L. Ross Chambers, the Marvin Felheim Distinguished University Professor of French and Comparative Literature; Martinus J.G. Veltman, the John D. MacArthur Professor of Physics; Charles H. Williams Jr., professor of biological chemistry; Shien-Ming Wu, the J. Reid and Polly Anderson Professor of Manufacturing Technology and professor of mechanical engineering and applied mechanics; and Tadataka Yamada, the John G. Searle Professor of Internal Medicine and chair, Department of Internal Medicine.
Faculty Recognition Awards, which honor faculty for their “contribution to the University through significant achievements in research and other scholarly activities, excellence as a teacher and counselor and/or distinguished participation in University service activities,” will be presented to six faculty members.
The six, who will receive $1,000 stipends, are: Richard A. Campbell, assistant professor of communication; Anne C. Herrmann, associate professor of English language and literature and of women’s studies; Earl Lewis, associate professor of history and of Afroamerican and African history and director, Center for Afroamerican and African Studies; David M. Lubman, professor of chemistry; Michael A. Marletta, the John Gideon Searle Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy and professor of biological chemistry; Marilynn M. Rosenthal, professor of sociology, The University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Two will receive the Regents’ Award for Distinguished Public Service, which carries a $1,000 stipend. They are Richard W. Bailey, professor of English language and literature, and Sharon E. Sutton, associate professor of architecture and urban planning.
The Distinguished Faculty Governance Award, which carries a $500 stipend, will be presented to Claude A. Eggertsen, professor emeritus of education.
Janet U. Kozyra, assistant research scientist, Space Physics Research Laboratory, will receive the University Research Scientist Award, which carries a $1,000 stipend.
The University Research Scientist Lectureship, which carries a $1,500 stipend, will be awarded to Jerome M. Clubb, professor of history and research scientist, Center for Political Studies, Institute for Social Research.
The U-M-Press book award will be presented posthumously to Jack L. Walker Jr. for Mobilizing Interest Groups in America: Patrons, Professions, and Social Movements. The award carries a $1,000 stipend and will be accepted by Walker’s two sons.
