The following items were approved by the Board of Regents at is April 19 meeting.
Radiology to move to Med Sci from Kresge
The laboratory functions of the Department of Radiology will move from the Kresge Buildings to the Medical Science I Building next spring. The regents approved a project to renovate 26,300 gross square feet of space to accommodate the new tenants. Infrastructure improvements to mechanical and electrical systems will be included. Funding for the $2.985 million project will be provided by the Medical School and General Fund.
Eye Center expansion project increased
Build-out of space left empty in the design of the current Eye Center expansion project was approved, raising the budget from $121 million to $132 million. The new space will be occupied by the Department of Ophthalmology and the Brehm Center for Type 1 Diabetes Research. The expansion project, which is being funded by the Hospitals and Health Centers, Medical School and private gifts is scheduled to be completed in Winter 2010.
Utilities extended to North Quad
The regents approved a $2.9 million project that will extend utility service to the North Quad Residential and Academic Complex site. An underground tunnel and equipment to provide steam, condensate, domestic hot water, chilled water, high voltage electrical and telecommunications lines will be provided by the $2.9 million project. Utilities resources will fund the project and Cummins & Barnard will provide the design.
Chilled water line to be extended on North Campus
Underground piping to provide chilled water for air conditioning and equipment cooling will be extended this summer to the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Laboratory and the Duderstadt Center. Utility resources will fund the $1.1 million project, which will be designed by Fishbeck, Thomson, Carr and Huber, Inc.
Increase ok’d for construction approvals
The threshold for obtaining board approval for new construction and renovation projects was increased from $500,000 to $1 million, though regents will be informed quarterly about projects falling into that range. Of the 65 projects in the $500,000 to $1 million range approved in the past five years, more than half were for capital infrastructure maintenance items, such as replacing elevators and roofing material or upgrading mechanical and electrical systems. The $1 million threshold also aligns with public and private peer institutions.

Retirements
Marylee Dalton, librarian in the Law Library, effective April 27. She joined the University Law Library in 1972. Recently she helped plan the project for reclassifying the entire Law Library collection into the Library of Congress subject arrangement classification system.
Jack East, research scientist in the College of Engineering, effective Nov. 30, 2006. He joined U-M in 1974. His research focused on microwave and millimeter wave semiconductor devices. He also was a major contributor to the development of nonlinear models for devices used in microwave and millimeter wave electronics.
Stephen Ernst, professor of cell and developmental biology in the Medical School, effective Feb. 28. He joined the University in 1978. He taught medical histology and dental histology throughout his years at U-M. He has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology: Cell Physiology, and the Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry.
Barbra Morris, senior lecturer in English, Residential College, and senior lecturer in English, Sweetland Writing Center, LSA, effective Oct. 31, 2006. She joined the University in 1973. She was among the founding faculty of the English Composition Board and helped to build programs in writing cross the curriculum as the board became the Sweetland Writing Center.
