Reported rape near south campus
A U-M student told Ann Arbor Police March 5 that she had been sexually assaulted as she walked through an off-campus neighborhood during spring break. The student was seeking medical attention at the U-M Emergency Department March 5 for injuries she said she received about 5 p.m. Feb. 28 as she walked along Mary Street between East Hoover and Benjamin streets, where an unknown man knocked her to the ground, held a knife to her throat and raped her.
The U-M Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued a crime alert March 6 that described the suspect as a white man in his 30s, 5 feet 11 inches with a medium build, scruffy facial hair, brownish-gray hair, teeth missing on one side of his mouth and an overall dirty appearance. He was last seen wearing a dirty brown coat and possibly a red baseball cap. Anyone with information about this incident or suspect is asked to call the Ann Arbor Police at 996-3199 or DPS at 763-1131.
Two employee assaults investigated
The Department of Public Services (DPS) received two separate reports in February of sexual assault by U-M Health System employees. A former U-M social worker is under investigation for charges of inappropriate sexual conduct last fall with a patient.
In an unrelated case, a University Hospital employee reported Feb. 21 that another employee forcibly fondled him in early February. Both cases remain under investigation.
Student arrested for domestic assault
A 42-year-old graduate student was arrested Feb. 13 after U-M police responded to his Northwood Community Apartment to attend to his wife, who reportedly had fallen. The victim, also 42, was taken to the U-M Hospital Emergency Room by ambulance and held overnight for treatment. After officers were told the husband allegedly pushed the woman down the stairs inside the apartment, they arrested the man for aggravated assault and domestic violence. His pre-trial hearing is scheduled for March 14. He is out on bond.
