According to a Chinese legend about the Milky Way, the Silver River illuminated both heaven and Earth in constant light and connected the realms so that Earthly and celestial creatures regularly mingled. McArthur Grant winner Bright Sheng of U-M and Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang (“M. Butterfly”) created “Silver River” in 1977; it integrates Western and Chinese cultures into the telling of this 4,000-year-old folk tale. The play is at 8 p.m. Jan. 12-13 at the Power Center for the Performing Arts. For ticket information, contact the University Musical Society at 764-2538 or at www.ums.org. (Photo by Stephanie Berger)
