Computers, artifacts taken from Frieze
Three computers and 10 boxes of artifacts were reported stolen from three offices in the Frieze Building May 31. One of the office occupants told Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers she had locked her office door when she left the building the night before around 6:30 p.m. Officers noted each of the office doors had visible damage consistent with a forced entry. Anyone who saw people in or leaving the building that night is asked to call the DPS Criminal Investigations Unit at (734) 764-8559.
Fondling incidents reported
Two women told police they forcibly had been fondled in separate incidents by men they could identify. A 35-year-old University Hospital patient told staff she had been groped May 15 in the hospital hallway by another patient. The suspect is a 33-year-old man from Dearborn. The case has been presented to the county prosecutor’s office for authorization of arrest charges.
A 25-year-old contract employee told U-M police she had been assaulted May 15 at the Dental School. In the May 25 report the woman reported that a 70-year-old staff person forcibly had fondled her and made lewd comments to her twice that day. The suspect no longer is employed at the University. DPS continues to investigate the report.
Arsons result in minimal damage
Two small fires in May that have been ruled as arson resulted in minimal damage to University property. About 8:30 a.m. May 10, Plant Operations staff extinguished a burning guardrail post along West Medical Center Drive. Two staff members had observed smoke coming from the guardrail and used a fire extinguisher and bucket of water to put out the fire. Responding officers did not observe any evidence of how the fire began.
On May 21 a caller reported to DPS that a trash can was on fire in the stairwell of the Church Street parking structure. The responding police officer extinguished the fire. Damage was limited to the can and its contents.
