Office break-ins still of concern

Campus police continue to investigate another rash of office break-ins in June. As stated in a security alert issued June 29, police are looking for two suspects in connection with three Central Campus break-ins in June, as well as several that occurred in April and May. The suspects have been described as two Hispanic males, 19 to 21 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, with medium builds and often seen wearing baggy pants and carrying backpacks.

Police urge members of the campus community to call the Department of Public Safety (DPS) immediately upon hearing a loud bang, seeing anyone suspicious in their buildings, or observing someone looking into offices and claiming to be lost. Call 911 from a campus phone or (734) 763-1131 from a cell phone.

Most of the office break-ins have occurred in the early evening hours. Office door windows or the adjoining walls have been broken or kicked in to gain access. In the June incidents, laptop computers were taken from Randall Laboratory and Angell Hall. Nothing was reported missing in a June 28 incident at the Frieze Building, though an office door window glass was broken.

Safety tips include: secure valuables at all times, especially laptop computers, data projectors and purses; lock up all valuables when offices need to be unattended, even for a brief moment; and don’t confront strangers—call DPS immediately.

Visitor arrested for assault

A 30-year-old homeless man was arrested June 8 after he reportedly punched an 18-year-old Ann Arbor man in the face seven times. Bonn Washington pleaded no contest June 13 to aggravated assault. He remains in jail awaiting his July 14 sentencing hearing.

Washington reportedly struck the man who was sitting with a friend on a bench at the northwest corner of the Diag around 2:15 p.m. June 8. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Washington fled the scene but was picked up nearby by Ann Arbor Police officers who matched his description to a radio alert.

Four vehicles removed from campus; three recovered

Two cars, a van and a motorcycle reportedly were stolen from campus in June. All but the motorcycle later were found undamaged and returned to their owners.

The motorcycle, a small 2005 Yamaha, reportedly was taken June 15 from lot NC16 off Beal Avenue. The owner had purchased the unit five days earlier.

In a June 1 incident, DPS officers received a call that a 24-year-old Houston man illegally was driving a University Ford Taurus. He is a former student employee. Police located the man in possession of the car and key. Information about the case has been submitted to the county prosecutor’s office for action.

A 1994 Ford Escort reportedly was taken June 27 from lot M34, south of Observatory Lodge. The vehicle was found the next day in M26, off East Medical Center Drive. DPS continues to investigate and has identified a suspect.

A University GMC van reportedly was taken from Kennedy Drive June 27. It was found two days later behind an apartment building on Sybil Street and returned to the owner.

Diag board burned

Papers posted on a triangular board at the northwest corner of the Diag were burned June 19. DPS received a call reporting the fire at about 12:30 a.m. When officers arrived on the scene, the fire had been extinguished. The posting board sustained approximately $100 damage.
