Two students arrested for burglaries
A 19-year-old student was arrested March 14 in connection with multiple thefts at Oxford Housing. An Oxford resident had filed a report with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) that she discovered several personal items and clothing were missing from her unlocked room when she returned from a weekend trip.
Through discussions with hallmates and investigation by DPS, two additional victims were identified and some of the missing items were discovered in a resident’s room. DPS has submitted the investigation information to the county prosecutor’s office for warrant authorization.
In a separate case, a Baits resident was arrested in connection with thefts from Bursley Hall and the Duderstadt Center. Kingsley Maduka, 19, from Southfield, Mich., was arraigned March 21 for stealing a financial transaction device and retaining stolen property. He was released on personal bond.
Two car thefts reported
A University Hospital patient reported March 9 that her car was taken by an acquaintance. The car owner told DPS that she had given the driver permission to run an errand, but claimed he had driven to other locations. The car was recovered the next morning at the Huron Street homeless shelter.
On March 14, a staff person at the Pound House Children’s Center reported a department car and keys were missing. Both were found in the proper places the following day.
Laptop taken from open room
A resident of East Quadrangle reported that a laptop computer and iPod were stolen from an unsecured room while the resident was showering March 23. DPS is investigating.
Traffic enforcement efforts lead to arrests
DPS recently conducted three special enforcement efforts targeting seatbelt violations. During the sessions March 18 and April 1-2, officers issued 77 citations for failure to wear a seatbelt. Three drivers were arrested for driving with suspended or restricted licenses and one person was arrested for possession of marijuana.
During one March 18 traffic stop, two men and one woman, all in their 40s, were arrested after several pieces of stolen property were found in their car. The property, including credit cards and wallets, had been reported stolen from campus and off-campus offices and stores. The Ohio residents remain in jail, charged with five felony counts each, as DPS explores additional counts with several law enforcement jurisdictions.
