Students robbed in Fletcher Hall

Two residents of Fletcher Hall awoke Feb. 18 to find money and personal property missing, as well as evidence that someone had searched their room while they slept. Officers from the Department of Public Safety (DPS) found no signs of forced entry and the residents couldn’t remember if they had secured their room door. A hallmate reported seeing two white males around 20 years of age leaving the room around 4 a.m. DPS continues to investigate the incident.

Suspect identified in taxi dispute

A Markley Hall resident faces arraignment and a pre-trial hearing April 5 in connection with a dispute with a taxi driver. The 43-year-old victim called DPS from an emergency telephone at 3 a.m. Feb. 12 to report he’d been beaten up and robbed. The taxi driver told police that after delivering a young man to Markley Hall, the passenger indicated he didn’t have any money to pay for his ride. The two became engaged in a physical altercation, after which the suspect ran into the residence hall and the victim discovered he was missing money from his shirt pocket. The prosecutor’s office authorized four charges against the 19-yearl-old man—assault and battery, larceny less than $200, larceny by false pretenses and minor in possession of alcohol.

Two hospital reports for unwanted touching

Two unrelated reports were filed with DPS in February from the University Hospital for inappropriate fondling. In the first case, a patient reported Feb. 10 that she had been fondled by a nurse and a nurse’s aide three days earlier. In the second case, a staff person reported Feb. 17 that she had been inappropriately touched by a patient’s husband. Both incidents continue to be investigated.

Alleged thief caught after chase

A 48-year-old Ann Arbor man was arrested Feb. 17 after a brief foot chase with police along State Street. Michael Taylor has been charged with resisting and obstructing a police officer, larceny from a building and trespass. Taylor had been spotted in Weidenbach Hall removing pop cans from the employee lounge. When the arriving police officer attempted to talk with the suspect outside, Taylor refused to cooperate and attempted to strike the officer’s face before fleeing. He remains in jail awaiting his pre-trial hearing scheduled for March 14.
