Janet Baylis

Janet Baylis, an Information Technology Central Services (ITCS) administrative staff member, died Jan. 7 at Arbor Hospice Residence after a brief illness. She was 61.

Baylis worked for U-M for more than 40 years. She was a graduate of Ann Arbor High School and began her University career in the Extension Services department as a secretary in 1961. She joined ITCS in 1999.

Throughout her career at U-M, Baylis was responsible for a diverse and wide range of tasks. She spent most of her years at U-M working with faculty, staff and students. In all roles, she tried to make sure her efforts helped colleagues and those she served accomplish their educational and professional goals within the context of the broader academic purpose of the University, her colleagues say.

“Janet earned the trust and respect of many because she was loyal, dedicated and most of all, compassionate,” said JoElla Coles, Baylis’ most recent manager. “She challenged herself to take on different roles, learn new things, and stay enthusiastic and positive.”

Colleague Joanne Helzerman says, “One of Janet’s most endearing qualities was her ability to put people at ease. She was easy to talk to and a confidant to many people. She treasured her colleagues and thought of them as friends and family. Janet had a high work ethic and was a very dedicated person. We are all still feeling the void she has left.”

Baylis was a member of the Bethlehem United Church of Christ. In September of 1964 she married William Baylis, who survives her. Other survivors are her brother, Robert Harris; two nephews, Andre (Lexi) Harris and Daniel (Misti) Trap; a niece, Jennifer (Ted) Fricano; three great nephews and a great niece; mother-in-law, Maxine Baylis; and sister-in-law, Bonnie (Bill) Trap.

Funeral Services were held Jan. 10 in Ann Arbor.
