Collection honors upcoming holiday

This rare copy of the 1766 publication “Prayers for Shabbath, Rosh-Hashanah, and Kippur” is available for viewing at the Clements Library. Isaac Pinto, editor of the work, was a merchant, teacher and interpreter who wanted to explain Jewish traditions to people unfamiliar with them and provide prayers in English for people who could not read Hebrew. The Clements Library is open Monday-Friday 9-11:45 a.m. and 1-4:45 p.m. Those interested in viewing American Judaica—which also includes correspondence of Jewish merchants from the Revolutionary War era—can enter the library through the north entrance and go to the reading room on the lower level. Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown Friday (Sept. 6).
