Additional crime alerts issued
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued six crime alerts since mid-March—three home invasions, two Peeping Toms and one armed robbery in Ann Arbor.
In the early morning of April 9, a U-M student reported that he was walking in the 700 block of Church Street when he was confronted by a man with a black, semi-automatic pistol. Upon request, the victim gave the suspect money, credit cards, a cell phone and a jacket, and then left the area. The jacket and credit cards were recovered later by police at the scene. The victim described the suspect as a Black male, 5 feet 8 inches–5 feet 10 inches tall with very short hair and wearing dark clothing.
Home invasions occurred April 17 in West Quad, April 6 in the Northwood V complex and March 14 at Betsey Barbour. A West Quad resident informed DPS that an unknown male entered her unlocked room around 9:30 a.m. April 17. When she looked at him, he fled with her backpack. The suspect is described as a Black male, 5 feet 8 inches–5 feet 10 inches tall, with short black hair and wearing a light blue, button-down, short-sleeve shirt.
Residents of four apartments in Northwood V filed reports with DPS that indicated a person had entered the apartments, probably through the sliding patio doors that had not been secured with the security bars, between approximately 2–4 a.m. One resident reported he heard a noise from his first floor living area, but the suspect fled before the resident arrived from the second-floor bedroom. Computer equipment, books, a portable stereo and money were reported stolen from the other apartments. Residents were cautioned to lock all of their doors and use the security bars whenever they are sleeping or not at home.
A Betsey Barbour resident reported her laptop had been removed from her unlocked, unattended room March 14. DPS issued a crime alert with a suspect description of a Black male, 18–20 years old, 6 feet–6 feet 2 inches tall, 180 pounds with dark complexion and wearing braided hair and a tan canvas coat.
Two Peeping Tom incidents occurred April 11 at East Quad and March 29 at Baits. The most recent incident was reported just before 9 a.m. April 11 after a woman saw a man peeking under the shower curtain. Later that day, another resident on the same floor reported that her backpack was taken from her unlocked room. The backpack was recovered in nearby Lorch Hall, but the resident’s keys were missing. Two more students reported that their backpacks had been stolen that morning from Lorch Hall and the Frieze Building. DPS is looking for a dark-skinned Black male, 20–21 years old, with short hair in a fade style, wearing a yellow long-sleeve shirt with white lettering on the sleeves.
In Baits, the suspect entered the unlocked room and connecting bathroom while a resident was showering. The suspect fled once he was observed. The suspect is described as a Black male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a full, trimmed beard and wearing a black skull cap.
Two arrested for home invasion
A U-M student and a student from Michigan State University were arrested in connection with a home invasion in Couzens Hall March 31. The county prosecutor authorized warrants for both men for first-degree home invasion and conspiracy to first-degree home invasion. The first count carries up to a 20-year prison sentence. The two men are accused of assaulting the resident after breaking his room door to gain entry following a series of disagreements via e-mail. Nothing was stolen during the incident, though other property was damaged. None of the men were injured.
Two arrested for assaults
Two residents of Arbor Heights were arrested in mid-March in connection with cases of criminal sexual conduct (CSC). Both men are accused of third-degree CSC after reportedly having sexual contact with two minors who also are Arbor Heights residents.
Several arrests made at Hash Bash
DPS officers arrested 24 people and issued 13 tickets April 6 during the annual Hash Bash. Twenty-three people were arrested for possession or use of marijuana, while one person was arrested for intent to distribute marijuana. Of the arrestees, one was a U-M student and only four had Ann Arbor addresses. The tickets were issued for alcohol on the Diag, skateboarding on campus, dogs off their leashes, sales and solicitation, youth tobacco act, driving without an operator’s license and not wearing a seatbelt.
