Parking permits frequently stolen
Staff and faculty who own U-M parking permits should take precautions in securing their vehicles on campus. This is the time of year when parking permits, particularly blue permits, frequently are stolen. Many victims indicate they had not locked their vehicles prior to the larcenies. More than a dozen permits were reported stolen in July. Call the Department of Public Safety (DPS), (734) 763-1131, to file police reports when permits are stolen on campus.
Teen charged in campus incidents
A 17-year-old male has been charged with several crimes in connection with campus incidents. He was seen by Ann Arbor police July 8 driving a 1985 Toyota Corolla that had been reported stolen July 2 from Lot W6. He also is charged in the thefts of cell phones July 11 from two parked cars on South Campus, one belonging to a U-M employee and the other to a student. Additionally, the Ann Arbor teen was found July 11 on the Diag with a pellet gun.
Youths foiled in theft attempt
A 17-year-old male and two juveniles were caught July 12 attempting to take computer equipment from Burton Memorial Tower. A construction worker had informed DPS that he had witnessed three people climbing through a window. Two DPS police officers and two public safety officers intercepted the trio. A warrant was authorized for the 17-year-old on breaking and entering charges. Information regarding the two juveniles has been submitted to the juvenile court system.
Man reports assault, robbery by pair
A 47-year-old man reportedly was assaulted July 30 on the Diag by two young men. A 22-year-old man from Ann Arbor and a16-year-old from Ypsilanti allegedly hit the man in the head with a backpack that contained a brick. The victim also reported the men stole $20 from him. The Washtenaw County prosecutor’s office authorized an arrest warrant for the adult for unarmed robbery and an arrest warrant for the juvenile for unarmed robbery and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
Masspectrometer destroyed in fire
A fire July 30 destroyed a masspectrometer, valued at $500,000, in a Medical Science I Building laboratory. No injuries were sustained in the fire, which fire inspectors determined originated with the tool’s computer. Other equipment in the lab also sustained smoke damage.
Fire destroys car near hospital
A fire July 7 destroyed a Mercury Sable belonging to a hospital visitor. No injuries occurred during the incident at the main entrance to the hospital. Fire officials reported no signs of foul play and ruled the fire accidental.
Juveniles charged in bicycle thefts
Two bicycles were stolen July 20 from a bike rack near the Shapiro Undergraduate Library. Officers apprehended two juveniles in connection with the crime and recovered the bicycles. The suspects were charged with larceny and turned over to their parents.
