Crime alert issued in larceny
A crime alert was issued May 24 for unlawful entry and a larceny in Markley Hall. The suspect, who entered a women’s restroom on at least two occasions, was described as a 20-year-old male with short black hair, dark complexion and brown eyes. During one incident, he is reported to have stolen room keys and an Mcard.

Several assaults reported
An assault warrant has been authorized by the Washtenaw County prosecutor following a report of inappropriate touching by a staff member at Canham Natatorium.
On May 8, a patient at the East Ann Arbor Health Clinic reported that she had been inappropriately touched by a doctor during a medical exam. The case was submitted to the Washtenaw County prosecutor, who declined to issue an arrest warrant. The case has been closed.
A pedestrian allegedly was struck by a male suspect May 31 in front of the Michigan Union after refusing to give the man money. The pedestrian was not injured, and the case is under investigation.
Three trespassers caught at CCRB
Three juveniles refused to leave the Central Campus Recreational Building (CCRB) at the request of staff May 21. A DPS officer caught the three boys after chasing them on foot. One boy was arrested for resisting and obstructing a police officer and for failure to identify himself, while the second was arrested for obstructing a police officer and violation of the Controlled Substance Act. The third was released.
Violators caught
A 25-year-old man was detained May 4 outside Baits II, shortly after DPS was called about a wallet stolen from a Baits residence room. The suspect had the wallet in his possession and was arrested for burglary with forced entry. The prosecutor’s office reduced the charge and issued a warrant for larceny.
On May 13, a 17-year-old Ann Arbor male was observed throwing a bottle from the Church Street parking structure. After a short pursuit, a DPS officer caught the teen, who admitted throwing the bottle. The case has been submitted to the prosecutor’s office.
Several locked bicycles stolen
Five bicycles were reported stolen during May from University bike racks. All five bicycles were locked with cable locks. They had been parked near the Modern Languages Building, University Hospital, Lorch Hall, East University Avenue and Pierpont Commons.
“We suggest that bikes should be secured with U-bolt locks rather than cable locks,” said Lt. Joseph Piersante, head of DPS’s Criminal Investigations Division. “U-bolt locks are very difficult to cut through. The Ann Arbor Police Department also received a number of reports in May of stolen bicycles that had been secured with cable locks.”
Unattended purses, wallets targeted
More than a dozen purses and wallets were reported stolen from various University buildings during May. In all cases, the property had been left unattended and unsecured.
“Whenever people step away from their property, they need to lock their desks or their offices, or somehow secure their belongings,” said Piersante. “Our campus is open to the public, and we must remember to take basic security precautions. Credit and debit cards are especially popular targets of thieves.”
