The show features photography and original music inspired by the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
The images and music for the show, documenting the land and its wildlife, were created during a 100-day, 1,000-mile Arctic wilderness journey. The program also will address the controversy over oil development vs. wilderness protection for the refuge’s coastal plain. Photo by Ken Madsen

Harlem Nutcracker is back Nov. 26
The Harlem Nutcracker, arranged by Duke Ellington 30 years ago, will be performed at the Detroit Opera House Nov. 26–Dec. 5.
A contemporary take on the well-known holiday ballet, it takes place in Harlem with an African American family’s holiday celebration at Grandmother Clara’s. During the holiday celebration, Clara reminisces about 1920s Harlem and the courtship between her and her late husband at ‘Club Sweets.’ Dancers in outrageous costumes perform to Ellington’s arrangements of Tchaikovsky’s score, including such numbers as ‘Sugar Rum Cherry’ and the ‘Peanut Brittle Brigade.’
Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. Nov. 26, 27 and Dec. 1–4; at 2 p.m. Nov. 27 and Dec. 4; and at 3 p.m. Nov. 28 and Dec. 4. Tickets, $12–$50, are available through the Detroit Opera House, (313) 237-SING or the University Musical Society, 764-2538.
