The University Record, October 4, 1999 This is the 10th year that the University has sponsored educational programs and events designed to increase awareness of important disability issues. Investing in Ability Week is designed to promote a greater recognition of the skills and talents that individuals with disabilities contribute to the University and society.

This year’s events include:

“Avoiding Pitfalls in Accommodating Employees with Psychiatric Disabilities,” 1–2:30 p.m. Oct. 11, Waggoner Conference Room, Mental Health Research Institute. Panelists are from the School of Nursing, South Quadrangle Dining Services, MWorks, the Department of Psychiatry and the Office of Equity and Diversity Services.

“The Supreme Court and the Americans with Disabilities Act,” 1:30–3 p.m. Oct. 12, Kuenzel Room, Michigan Union. Attorney Megan P. Norris of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone P.L.C. will interpret how recent Supreme Court decisions on the Americans with Disabilities Act affect the U-M.

Tenth Annual James Neubacher Award Ceremony, noon–1:30 p.m. Oct. 13, UCEN Happenings Room, U-M-Flint. This year’s award will be presented to alumnus Michael J. Thorp, who is a WJRT-TV12 anchor and reporter. The award is a memorial to James Neubacher, who advocated effectively for individuals with disabilities while he was a reporter for The Detroit Free Press.

Council for Disability Concerns Appreciation Awards, 10 a.m. Oct. 27, Vandenberg Room, Michigan League. Certificates of appreciation will be presented to members of the University community whose actions have significantly benefited individuals with disabilities. Those being recognized undertook exceptional efforts to accommodate employees and students with disabilities.

The Talk to Us Theatre Troupe, the Housing Division’s student theater group, will present a new performance about living with students who have disabilities at 8 p.m. Oct. 12 in Classroom 126, East Quadrangle; Oct. 20 in the East Lounge, Alice Lloyd; and Oct. 26 in the East Lounge, Bursley Hall.
