Former student/employee charged with theft
Department of Public Safety (DPS) Capt. James Smiley reports that on June 30 DPS officers arrested a former student who was also a former employee for theft of a computer from the Institute for Social Research Building. The man is charged with a felony theft, punishable by up to four years in prison.
DPS officers received the report on April 14 and investigated the case, developing information that led to the arrest of the male suspect. The man has waived preliminary examination July 8 and was bound over to Washtenaw County Circuit Court for trial.
Suspect arrested in West Hall computer theft
DPS officers were alerted July 2 that a man had been spotted carrying a computer into a wooded area on North Campus near the School of Music. Officers watched the spot where the computer had reportedly been placed and later arrested a male employee when he removed the equipment from the woods. Officers recovered the equipment, which had allegedly been taken from West Hall, and charged the man with one count of felony larceny, a crime punishable by up to four years in prison.
A preliminary examination was scheduled for today (July 22) and the suspect was released on bond.
Sports camps keep officers busy
DPS officers have been called out to assist visitors and campers on the U-M campus with sprains and other minor injuries suffered by young athletes who are attending the many sports camps at the U-M. Currently sports camps in women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and tennis, women’s volleyball, baseball, ice hockey, field hockey and wrestling are in session. Officers have been called upon to deliver emergency messages to campers and to provide security.
X Suspect in vehicle theft had other charges pending
Last month, the Record reported that a youth had been arrested in connection with the theft of several vehicles from the North Campus/Family Housing area. The 17-year-old man, who worked at a fast-food restaurant in the area, allegedly would come to work from the Detroit area in the morning, but not have a ride home each night. Instead, he reportedly broke into and stole cars from the nearby area, driving them home and abandoning them, or, in one instance, setting fire to them.
In June, six vehicles were reported stolen from University lots NC6, NC45 and NC46. On July 15, the man waived a scheduled preliminary exam and was bound over to Washtenaw County Circuit Court. He is not affiliated with the University.
