The University Record, March 11, 1998
Michigan women’s basketball coach Sue Guevera has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year by her peers. Guevera took over the head coaching reins in July 1996 as an interim coach and was named permanent coach in February 1997.
The women’s team is the #10 seed in the Midwest Regional, playing #7 UCLA on Friday (March 13) in Tuscaloosa, Ala. If they win, they will play either #2 Alabama or #15 North Carolina-Greensboro on March 15.
In her first year, Guevera took the team to its best start ever with an 11-3 mark at the end of the season, a 15-11 record overall and 7-9 Big Ten Conference record. The 15 wins were the most in one season since the 1989–90 NCAA Tournament team went 20-10.
The team posted an 18-8 record this year and a third-place finish in the Big Ten. Guevera’s overall two-year record is 34-20.
