Five Business and Finance Division staff members recently received Distinguished Staff Awards at a ceremony and dinner at the Oxford Conference Center. The awards recognize exceptional service and outstanding achievements by staff members who display ongoing excellence and unusual initiative. Award winners receive $500 and a recognition plaque.
Recipients are:
Terry Bareis, administrative assistant in Plant Operations, is “a true example of a team player and demonstrates care and commitment to the leadership responsibility of her job as well as developing the future of the University,” said Beverly Bricker, who nominated her. “Her kindness, knowledge and expertise are much appreciated.”
Bareis is involved in several areas of the PeopleSoft Project and has participated in business process re-engineering for the HRAA/M-Pathways project, giving 80 percent of her time to the project and maintaining her regular job duties.
Cindee Bryant, program coordinator in Human Resource Development (HRD), “has revolutionized many major functions” of HRD in the short time she has been there (three years), and streamlined the catalog, making it more “user friendly” and enabling staff to plan their professional development activities far in advance.
Bryant, who was nominated by Robert Holmes, has improved the means by which HRD communicates with the University community by assembling an extensive marketing database she uses to communicate information electronically and via mailings about upcoming professional development opportunities. She is developing a virtual calendar of professional development opportunities to make it easier for potential participants to learn about programs.
Connie Kilyanek, custodian in Plant Building Services, was nominated by Lisa Jones, Biomedical Engineering, where Kilyanek “provides outstanding and exceptional customer service.” Her nomination also was supported by students in the unit.
“Connie also is viewed as a member of the Biomedical Engineering family. She wants to assure that the department is presenting the best possible professional image. Connie is never asked to provide special services, but she regularly takes the initiative to go the extra mile to make the department sparkle.”
Jeannie Slater, financial clerk, Plant Business Office, is one of a four-person team in her office and “contributes greatly to her team and to the entire office,” according to Connie Angius, who nominated her. “Many customers and employees have commented that they respect her work ethic, ability to get along with others and that she has an endearing patience with others.”
Slater is always striving to improve the overall performance of her office, and has made office training part of her job. She spent several of her lunch hours helping a new employee improve his computer skills.
John Stuart, corporate tax manager, Financial Operations, who was nominated by Fred White, has been with the U-M for 26 years and “has always provided us with strong accounting and audit expertise.” In 1989, he established the tax section of Financial Operations and has developed a three-member staff responsible for all U-M tax activities. “His work has saved the University millions of dollars.”
Stuart is a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers tax group and is recognized nationally as an expert in non-exempt organization tax law. He also advised other institutions about tax matters to help them understand complex tax issues and establish programs similar to the U-M’s.
