Mall reception had something for everyone

A couple of raindrops tried to dampen the festivities at Ingalls Mall following the inauguration ceremony last Friday, but the sun held on strong so that everyone could partake in the free food and entertainment in celebration of the University’s new president.
“When the planning began last summer,” explained Ted Ciganik, School of Music faculty member and organizer of the afternoon’s entertainment, “the idea was to have a big picnic.”
And that’s pretty much what happened, as Hill Auditorium emptied into Ingalls Mall, the area bordered by Burton Tower, the Modern Languages Building and the Michigan League. A long line of people formed to greet and welcome Bollinger, who stood by the fountain. Staff, students, faculty and visiting dignitaries listened to music, got free ice cream and hot dogs and vied for Bollinger Inauguration T-shirts and frisbees.
Ciganik emphasized the celebratory mood of the afternoon. “We wanted upbeat music, and as much involvement as possible. I wanted to have student groups and also some staff involvement.”
The Diversity Choir, a staff ensemble from the Business and Finance Division, opened up the afternoon’s musical performances from a stage set up at the base of Burton Tower. Halfway through the program, focus shifted to the grassy center of Ingalls Mall, as students from the Dance Department performed to the Burton Tower music of carillonist Margo Halsted. The Friars, Harmonettes, Arts Chorale A Cappella, the School of Music Steel Drum Band and an alumni and student jazz ensemble also provided entertainment for the gathering crowd of ceremony audience members and students wandering through on their way to class.
“It’s great to be a part of all this,” said Ian Freedman, LS&A senior and member of the roaming pep band which also played throughout the afternoon.
State Rep. Liz Brater, who was at both the ceremony and the reception, agreed. “I’m thrilled to be here at this historic event and I’m thrilled that the Regents hired Lee Bollinger as the new president. I think he’ll do a terrific job.”
