Mark your calendar now and plan to attend the “UMatter” program 2:30-5 p.m. Oct. 1 at Crisler Arena.

The annual program, titled “Tailgate for Champions,” is designed “to formally acknowledge the contributions of all U-M staff members and to publicly honor a number of individuals who exemplify the Michigan ideal,” says Jackie R. McClain, executive direct or of Human Resources & Affirmative Action. Wally Amos, “The Cookie Man,” is the featured speaker.

“U-M staff are important and make a significant contribution to the success and mission of this institution,” McClain says. “The staff provides the backbone supporting all of the instructional, research and service efforts at the University. Staff, alo ng with faculty and students, create the pool of human talent, creativity and spirit that drives a university the size and strength of the U-M.

“I believe our excellent staff is one of the many factors contributing to the University’s ranking by college presidents and faculties as one of the top 10 universities in the country. October 1st is an opportunity to celebrate this heritage of staff ex cellence and to look forward to a future of strength.”

President Lee C. Bollinger will speak briefly at the program. Also on hand will be former U-M football coach and athletic director Bo Schembechler.

Amos will give the keynote address at 2:50 p.m. He is the founder of Famous Amos Cookies and father of the gourmet chocolate chip cookie industry.

A promoter at heart, Amos has been a national spokesman since 1979 for Literacy Volunteers of America. He also is a member of the boards of the National Center for Family Literacy and Cities in Schools. He is the teacher/host of 50 episodes of state-of -the-art programs for adult basic learners that air on PBS stations.
