The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) offers workshops for faculty and graduate student instructors who wish to learn more or improve their teaching skills.
Workshops scheduled for faculty this fall include:
Sept. 23, Fundamentals of Lecturing. Anne White Harrington, director of teacher development, School of Business Administration, 4:15-6:15 p.m. in Room B1275, Business Administration Building. The workshop covers areas critical to effective lecturing. Material is presented in lecture format and selected techniques are illustrated on videotape.
Oct. 7, Planning and Facilitating Discussions. Beverly Black and Matt Kaplan, CRLT instructional consultants, 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the East Conference Room, Rackham Building. Successful discussions depend on careful planning before class begins and the ability to generate interest and enthusiasm in the classroom.
Oct. 21, Assessing Student Learning: New Tools and How They Can Inform our Understanding of Teaching and the Scholarship of Teaching. Brian Coppola, associate professor of chemistry, 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the East Conference Room, Rackham Building. This workshop will illustrate how multidimensional assessment of student learning informs an understanding of teaching and how an emergent view of discipline-centered work in the area of pedagogical research and development can contribute to discussion on the scholarship of teaching.
Oct. 22 and Oct. 29, Speaking Skills in Classroom Settings. Nancy Kotzian, lecturer in communication, School of Business Administration, 7-9 p.m. in the West Conference Room, Rackham Building.
Oct. 28, Authority, Credibility and Gender. Anne White Harrington, 7-9 p.m. in the West Conference Room, Rackham Building. This workshop is designed to provide male and female faculty and graduate student instructors with practical skills and awareness related to the concerns of authority and credibility in the classroom.

Sept. 29, How Can You Get Students to Think Critically? Beverly Black and Matt Kaplan, 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the East Conference Room, Rackham Building. In this workshop, participants will create clear definitions of what it means for students to think critically, then take part in and reflect on a variety of activities designed to help students develop those skills.
Oct. 8 and Oct. 15, Speaking Skills. Nancy Kotzian, lecturer in communication, School of Business Administration, 5-8 p.m. in Room 2228, School of Education Building. This two-part workshop will help each participant improve his or her instructional speaking skills. The sessions focus on situations in which the instructor is “on stage”-giving lectures, explanations, instructions and introductions. Pizza provided, enrollment limited.
