The appointment of John R. Chamberlin as interim dean of the School of Public Policy will be recommended to the Regents at their September meeting. The appointment will be effective Sept. 1 until a permanent dean is appointed. The action is prompted by Dean Edward M. Gramlich’s pending appointment to the Federal Reserve Board.
In recommending the appointment, outgoing Provost J. Bernard Machen noted that Chamberlin is “a highly respected member of the School of Public Policy faculty. This is an important period of transition for the School, and John Chamberlin will serve as an excellent representative of the School.”
Chamberlin holds a B.S. from Lehigh University and Ph.D. from Stanford University. He joined the U-M as a lecturer in political science in 1970, became assistant professor in 1975 and rose through the ranks to professor in 1986.
Chamberlin’s research interests include ethics and public policy and political representation, with a particular interest in the reform of legislative redistricting.
His administrative posts have included serving as associate dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, special assistant to the LSA dean, assistant to the Rackham dean, acting chair of the Department of Communication Studies and LSA as sociate dean for academic appointments. He received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards in 1990.
Provost Nancy N. Cantor says she “is delighted with this appointment and is looking forward to working with Chamberlin and the School of Public Policy in the coming months.”
