A Labor Day weekend move-in schedule for students, while creating some degree of congestion around the residence halls, should not prove disruptive for Ann Arbor residents or for most U-M employees, who will not be working during the long holiday weekend.
Move-In begins Aug. 30 and continues through Labor Day, Sept. 1. Working in conjunction with the city of Ann Arbor, Move-In plans call for 11 city streets on or near the U-M campus to have non-standard traffic flow 6 a.m.-9 p.m. on the three primary Move-In days. No overnight parking next to U-M residence halls will be permitted immediately before and during the move-in period. The accompanying map shows altered street directions.
The designated Move-In program will ease traffic congestion on and around campus, and will help to ensure as little delay as possible to the Ann Arbor community, according to Alan Levy, director of housing public affairs in University Housing.
Officers from the Department of Public Safety, Housing Security and the Ann Arbor Police Department will be stationed at entry points near main intersections to help keep traffic moving and to direct students to unloading zones near residence halls.
University Housing’s 300-member Welcoming Committee will greet students and their parents as they arrive at their residence halls. New to this year’s program, nearly 600 members of the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association and Black Greek ‘ Association have volunteered to help move student belongings from vehicles to student rooms. Greek Life participation in Move-In was successfully piloted for the first time last year.
The Commercial Vendor Fair will run Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at two campus locations-the Hill site at Palmer Field and the Central Campus site on the northeast corner of South Quad’s basketball court.
The University Housing/City of Ann Arbor Move-In Task Force and the University Housing Move-In Planning Group plan nearly every aspect of the move-in program. City of Ann Arbor representatives on the Task Force include the City Administrator’s Office, the police and fire departments, parking and transportation, and the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority. U-M representatives include the Department of Public Safety and Housing Security, the Office of New Student Programs, Parking Services, the Medical Center, Transportation Services, News and Information Services, and Public Affairs and Housing Information. Planning group members represent various departments within Housing.
