Red oak finds new home as Diag renovations begin

Moving this 50-foot red oak is part of the renovation of the Diag, which will create a mostly uninterrupted vista between the Rackham Graduate School and the Horace H. Rackham Graduate Library. The oak and its ball of dirt weighed about 15 tons. The tow truck (below) used to help move the tree could have used more weight in the front end to keep it from lifting off the ground during the process.

More of the renovations, including new sidewalks, new sod and light fixtures, clay paving bricks and historical information markers, are scheduled for May 6.
