Sarabandi, Sinopoli to receive Russel Award March 11 for ‘scholarly achievement and promise’
Two faculty members—Kamal Sarabandi and Carla M. Sinopoli—will receive the University’s Henry Russel Award.
The annual award is given to young faculty members for scholarly achievement and promise. The award
will be presented March 11 in Rackham Amphitheater followed by the annual Henry Russel Lecture given by a senior member of the faculty. This year’s lecturer is William E. Bolcom, the Ross Lee Finney Distinguished University Professor of Music.
Sarabandi joined the faculty in 1992 as assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and was promoted to associate professor in 1996. His research interests include the development of scattering models for natural targets for remote sensing purposes and scattering and propagation of electromagnetic waves in random media.
Sinopoli was named assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology and assistant curator of the Museum of Anthropology in 1993 and was promoted to associate professor and associate curator in 1996. She is an archaeologist pursuing research on early empires and focusing her studies on empires through material culture analyses, especially pottery.
Both the Henry Russel Award and the Henry Russel Lectureship were established in 1925 with a bequest from Henry Russel, who held three U-M degrees.
