Charlotte Bunch will give 1997 Mullin-Welch Lecture From the Center for the Education of Women
Charlotte Bunch, founder and director of the Center for Women’s Global Leadership at Rutgers University and recent Women’s Hall of Fame inductee, will be the Center for the Education of Women 1997 Mullin-Welch Lecturer. She will discuss “Women’s Rights as Human Rights: Where to After Beijing?” The free, public lecture will be held 3:30-5 p.m. March 12 in the Amphitheater, Rackham Building.
Bunch led a Rutgers delegation of faculty and students to Beijing, China, in 1995 for the United Nations World Conference on Women. She has worked to help shape the global feminist movement and is a leader in national and international networking and advocacy for women.
Bunch joins a roster of influential women who have been selected to give the lecture since its inception in 1990, including authors Judith Viorst, Blanche Cook, and Sharon Bertsch McGrayne; poet, author and dramatist Denise Chavez; and columnist Terry Savage.
The annual Mullin-Welch Lecture honors the late Elizabeth Charlotte Mullin Welch, a 1939 U-M graduate and successful businesswoman who was an early role model in the struggle to further women’s aspirations. After her death in 1974, her two sisters established the lectureship to bring to the University speakers who “exemplify Elizabeth’s characteristics—gifts of creativity, strength of character and illumination of vision.”
