U-M-Flint prepares to go ‘Black to the Future’
The U-M-Flint has lined up a wide array of activities throughout February to celebrate Black History Month 1997 and this year’s theme, “Black to the Future.” The annual commemoration of the historical accomplishments, attributes, trials and traditions of Blacks in the community, the country and the world is sponsored on the Flint campus by the Office of Educational Opportunities Initiatives. This year’s events include:
Film/Video and Panel Discussions 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning today (Feb. 4) at Loving Center, second floor, Harding Mott University Center. Films shown will include Boyz in the Hood, Malcolm X, and Black Comedy in America.
Lunch Discussion Series—noon-2 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning tomorrow (Feb. 5) and continuing through Feb. 26, at Harding Mott University Center. Student and guest panelists.
Gospel Fest—7-9 p.m. Fri. (Feb. 7) at U-M-Flint Theatre. The Community Diversity Choir will lend their voices to gospel slections from traditional to contemporary.
African & African-American Storytelling—noon-3 p.m. Sat. (Feb. 9) in the Happenings Room, Harding Mott University Center. Stories for children ages 2-92.
Readings: Poetry and Creative Writing—noon-2 p.m. Feb. 14, Michigan Room A, Harding Mott University Center.
African, African-American & Modern Dance Classes, 1-4 p.m. Feb. 15 and 22 at the Flint Recreation Center. Classes are taught by Kimberly Jones, assistant professor of dance, U-M-Flint.
The Cultural Vibe Live—11 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 18 at Clint’s Cafe. Deejayed positive underground Hip Hop music and poetry readings.
African-American Heritage Month Grand Finale, 6:30-10 p.m. Feb. 28, Michigan Rooms, Harding Mott University Center. The wind-up to the month-long celebration includes cultural clothing and jewelry modeling and display; catered soul food; a jazz band; dancing; an African and African-American arts and crafts sale; and announcement of contest and raffle winners.
Essay and poster contests with prizes for entrants from elementary, middle, high school and college categories will run throughout the month.
