‘Sexpert’ Jay Friedman will speak during AIDS Awareness Week

Among numerous events scheduled during the University’s third annual AIDS Awareness Week, Feb. 1-9, is a free, public lecture by “sexpert” Jay Friedman at 8 p.m. Mon. (Feb. 3) in the University Club, first floor, Michigan Union.

Friedman will offer his insights on love, sex and dating in a humorous multi-media event. “My sex-positive message helps people avoid problems like AIDS, unintended pregnancy and date rape—and instead begin to enjoy sexuality as a natural and healthy part of their lives,” says Friedman, a sex educator certified by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists.

The following events also are designed to bring home the message of this year’s AIDS Awareness Week—“Remembering Lives . . . Educating Minds”:

Art exhibition, Piano Lounge, Pierpont Commons, Jan. 27-Feb. 9.

Panel discussion—Minority Issues and AIDS, 3-5 p.m. Feb.1, Trotter House.

Slide-Audio presentation—The D.C. Vigil and La Mancha, 3-4:30 p.m. Feb. 2, Wolverine Room, Michigan Union.

Quilting bee—add to the Ann Arbor AIDS Memorial Quilt, commemorating those who have died of AIDS, 4-7 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Pond Room, Michigan Union.

Jay Friedman—“Sex Matters,” 8-9:15 p.m. Feb. 3, U-Club, Michigan Union.

Lecture—“Advances in Treatment for HIV/AIDS,” Powell Kazanjian, assistant professor of internal medicine, 4 p.m. Feb. 4, first floor Main Auditorium, School of Public Health II.

Feature film-–Jeffrey, based on the award winning play, 9:10 p.m. Feb. 4, Michigan Theater. Ticket prices: $4.50 members, $5 adults.

“Spiritual Strength for Survival: A Service of Hope in the Face of AIDS,” 6:30 p.m. Feb. 4 in the Kuenzel Room, Michigan Union, followed by a candlelight march to the First Congregational Church.

Safer Sex Workshops—the 7-9 p.m. session Feb. 5 is for women who have sex with women; the 9-11 p.m. session on the same date is for men who have sex with men; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Programs Office (LGBPO) Lounge, Michigan Union.

River Huston—the poet-activist discusses her personal experience living with AIDS at 8 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Michigan Union Ballroom.

All week long, Project Serve will collect non-perishable foods, as well as toiletry items at various campus locations. All AIDS Awareness Week events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
