Regents say goodbye to Neal, hello to Taylor and Maynard

Interim President Homer Neal presided over his final Regents meeting last week, welcoming two new Regents to the board. Olivia Maynard and S. Martin Taylor attended their first meeting as Regents, joining the other board members in presenting a resolution honoring Neal.
Regent Rebecca McGowan read, “During his service as interim president, Dr. Neal has been committed to maintaining Michigan’s momentum and ensuring that the University remains a national leader in higher education. He has vigorously pursued a number of initiatives, among them an effort to redefine the nation’s government-university research partnership.
“Dr. Neal’s wife, Donna Jean, has been equally committed to Michigan, fostering collegiality and a sense of community by hosting scores of ceremonial and social events at the President’s House and Inglis House. She also has served on the Faculty Women’s Club board and been active in the community as a member of the Washtenaw County Advisory Board of the United Negro College Fund, the Ann Arbor chapter of Links Inc., and the Ann Arbor Women’s City Club.”
Neal bid farewell to the Board, telling them that “no one has a bigger passion for the University of Michigan than Jeannie and myself.” He added that one of his favorite memories of his tenure is sharing Thanksgiving dinner with students.
President Lee Bollinger will sit at the head of the table at the next Regents meeting, Feb. 20-21.
