Students aid park restoration efforts

Richard Urens (left), a graduate student in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, explains his proposed changes for the general store in Glen Haven, a historic village within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to parks Director Ivan Miller. Urens’ project in architectural restoration was sponsored by the National Park Service.

All proposals for changes to the park’s structures were made in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s standards for rehabilitation, under the guidance of David Evans, adjunct associate professor of architecture. Student designs will be incorporated into the final renovation plans for the park by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Students also proposed changes for the village’s 1837 inn and garage with chauffeur’s quarters.
