Kotowicz is School of Dentistry dean
William E. Kotowicz, acting dean of the School of Dentistry since September 1995, became dean of the School on Jan. 1.
His new appointment, effective through June 30, 2002, was approved by the Regents at their December meeting. He also is professor of dentistry.
“During the last 14 months, the School has made considerable progress under Dr. Kotowicz’s leadership,” said Provost J. Bernard Machen. “A new curriculum model for the D.D.S. program has been developed, the faculty has undertaken an initiative to develop interdisciplinary research groups, the School has an excellent plan for adapting to the new Value Centered Management environment, and fund-raising last year was the most successful in the School’s history.
“Prof. Kotowicz is highly respected in the School and his appointment as dean has wide support from the faculty and the unanimous support of the School’s Executive Committee.”
Kotowicz is a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Phi Kappa Phi honorary societies. Other memberships include the American Association for Dental Research, the International Association for Dental Research and the American Association of Dental Schools.
“Dr. Kotowicz is an active scholar and through his publications and outreach teaching is well known within the profession,” the Regents noted.
He joined the faculty as an assistant professor in 1969, was promoted to associate professor in 1971 and to professor in 1974.
He served as interim dean of the School of Dentistry 1987-89, and became senior associate dean of the School in 1989.
He received his doctorate of dental surgery from the U-M in 1966 and a master of science degree in denture prosthodontics in 1968 from the U-M.
