Sarah Goddard Power Award nominations due
Nominations are due for the Sarah Goddard Power Award sponsored by the Academic Women’s Caucus. The award will be given in a 3:30-5 p.m. ceremony March 19 at the Alumni Center. The annual award recognizes those individuals at the University who have contributed to the betterment of women through distinguished leadership, scholarship or other activities related to their professional lives. All U-M faculty are eligible for the award. Nominations, which may be made by any University employee, should be mailed to Sally Grace, HR/AA, 4005 Wolverine Tower, 1281.
Regents will meet Dec. 19-20
The Board of Regents will hold their regular monthly meeting this week beginning at 1:30 p.m. Thurs. (Dec. 19) in the Regents Room, Fleming Administration Bldg. Public comments will be heard at 4 p.m. in the same room.
The meeting continues Fri. (Dec. 20) at 9:30 a.m. in the Regents Room. For more information, contact the Regents’ Office, 764-3883.
Next Record is Jan. 7
Because of the winter holiday break, The University Record will not be published again until Jan. 7. The submission deadline for items for News Briefs and the Record Calendar is 5 p.m. Dec. 30. The Record will close for the holidays at 5 p.m. Dec. 24 and re-open at 8 a.m. Dec. 30. The Record offices will be closed Jan. 1.
Winter break brings
early pay day
Because of the winter break, the December monthly payroll will be distributed on Mon. (Dec. 23). There will be no changes in the biweekly Friday payrolls during December.
Exercise, have fun learning
Israeli dancing
Join Tom Starks at Hillel Foundation 7:30-10 p.m. Jan. 5 for instruction in Israeli dancing. Beginners and advanced dancers are welcome. The first half hour is specifically for beginners. There is a $2.50 fee for the class. Call 769-0500 for more information.
Work-Study funds
for fall term end Dec. 20
The Work-Study Program for fall term ends Fri. (Dec. 20). Work-Study employee time reports must be submitted to the Payroll Office by Dec. 27 for students to receive their final pay on Jan. 3 and for employer accounts to receive reimbursement under the program. The beginning work date for students with winter term Work-Study is Jan. 8. Call 763-4128 for information.
Exhibit Museum will hold
children’s workshop
The Exhibit Museum of Natural History will present “New Horizons,” a workshop for children, 10 a.m.-noon Jan. 18. Children ages 8-10 will learn how to identify constellations and other celestial objects in the night sky in the workshop, one of the Museum’s Explorations! series that runs through April. The workshop costs $12 for members, $15 for non-members. Registration deadline is Jan. 3. Call 764-0478 for information or to register.
UAC announces mini-courses
The University Activities Center (UAC), the University’s largest student-run organization, has announced the return of Mini-Courses. The semiannual Mini-Course program will begin registering the first week of February for the winter semester. Popular courses offered in the past, including bartending, CPR and ballroom dance, will return as part of this semester’s roster. Courses, held weekday evenings, cost $20-50 and are open to all U-M students, faculty and staff and to members of the Ann Arbor community. Call 763-1107 for more information.
Michigan Radio will celebrate season with classics Dec. 24
Classical Christmas music, produced by National Public Radio, will be played 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 25 on Michigan Public Radio. Pieces played will include “Nuts About the Nutcracker,” “Winter Scenes, American Style,” “A Choral Christmas,” “Christmas at the Pops,” “American Christmas,” and “Christmas at the Opera.” The programs can be heard on WUOM (91.7 FM), Ann Arbor; WFUM (91.1 FM), Flint; and WVGR (104.1 FM), Grand Rapids.
Wojno will speak to
prostate cancer support group
Kirk Wojno, assistant professor of pathology and of urology, will discuss “The Prostate: a Pathologist’s Perspective” at the meeting of the Prostate Cancer Education and Support Group at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 9 in Room 2C108, University Hospital. All prostate cancer survivors and their families are invited to the presentation. Refreshments and parking validation will be provided. The Prostate Cancer Education and Support Group is sponsored by the Comprehensive Cancer Center and programs are coordinated by the departments of Social Work and Urology. CRLT brochures arrive this week
Brochures announcing the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching’s winter programs for faculty, graduate student instructors and graduate students will be arriving in mailboxes this week. Several workshops are returning by popular demand and many new programs will be offered. Workshops begin Jan. 27. Registration begins the week of Jan. 6 and is required for most programs. Gardens offers adult botany class
David Michener will teach Adult Botany 7-9 p.m. Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30 and Feb. 6 at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. The class is an introduction to the diversity of land plants, from mosses to flowering plants. Emphasis is on the major groups of plants as responses to ancient and modern ecological challenges. U-M’s Alternative Breaks
program looking for site leaders
Project SERVE’s Alternative Breaks programs are accepting applications for site leaders. The positions are open to all: undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff. You don’t need prior experience to apply for the positions. Scheduled alternative breaks include: Alternative Winter Break (Jan. 10 due date), Alternative Spring Break (Mar. 24 due date), Alternative Summer Break (new program, due date to be determined) and alternative weekends (applications accepted year-round). Applications may be picked up at the Project SERVE office, 2205 Michigan Union.
Kick the cigarette habit
The American Lung Association will sponsor a 7-week group smoking cessation class, “Freedom from Smoking,” 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Jan. 14, East Ann Arbor Health Center, Health Education Resource Center, Plymouth Road at Earhart. U-M Press publishes 1996
Michigan Statistical Abstract
The University of Michigan Press has published the 1996 edition of the Michigan Statistical Abstract, the first time a standard statistical summary has been published for the State of Michigan in nearly a decade. This edition, the first published by the U-M Press, builds on earlier editions and provides historical data and up-to-date information on such topics as Michigan’s labor market, industry structure, population and housing, health and vital statistics, education and income. LIR sponsors lecture series on Supreme Court decisions
The Learning in Retirement (LIR) program of the Geriatrics Center’s Turner Geriatric Clinic will offer a series of six weekly lectures on Supreme Court decisions, to be held at 10 a.m. Thursdays beginning on Jan. 9 at the Kellogg Eye Center Auditorium. The lectures are open to those age 55 and older. Johnathan Weinberg, Wayne State University Law School, will open the series with a discussion of “The Supreme Court and the Mass Media.” Cost for the complete series of lectures is $25 per person for members and $30 for non-members. Lloyd Hall Scholars Program seeks resident fellows
The LS&A Lloyd Hall Scholars Program (LHSP) is seeking resident fellows to teach and live in Alice Lloyd Hall for the 1996-97 academic year. LHSP is the University’s oldest living/learning program. Responsibilities include teaching a four-credit course of your design, living in a residence hall with students and directing academic programming. LHSP fellows receive .40 GSI salary, tuition waiver, room and board, and a computer connected to the University servers. Application deadline is Jan. 17. The Museum of Art presents an Art Video, “Creating Art in China,” 12:10 p.m. Wed. (Dec. 18) and 7:30 Thurs. (Dec. 19) in the Media Room, Museum of Art. Toss the Feathers with
Michigan Radio Dec. 24
The Toss the Feathers Christmas Special 1996, airing on Michigan Radio 2-4 p.m. Dec. 24, will feature the best of the last three Toss the Feathers seasonal spoken word and musical performances. This year’s program will include a Christmas poetry reading and song from Irish musician Pat Kilbride, a winter story and song from Canada’s Loreen McKennitt, and a traditional Norwegian Christmas folk tale read by Leif Sorbye. The program can be heard on all three Michigan Radio stations: WUOM (91.7 FM), Ann Arbor; WFUM (91.1 FM), Flint; and WVGR (104.1 FM) Grand Rapids.
Learn ancient art of bonsai
at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Connie Bailie, senior horticultural assistant at the Gardens, will lead an introductory class on bonsai 2-4:30 p.m. three consecutive Sundays, Jan. 5, 12 and 19, at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. The $45 class sponsored by the Botanical Gardens will cover the art and the culture of bonsai, including plant selection, styling, fertilization, pest management and other basic guidelines for development and care of these miniature woody plants.
