Maynard,Taylor win seats on Board of Regents
Democrats Olivia Maynard and S. Martin Taylor will begin eight-year terms as Regents on Jan. 1. They will succeed Democrat Nellie Varner, who did not run for re-election, and Republican Deane Baker.
Maynard, president of the policy institute Michigan Prospect for Renewed Citizenship, holds an M.S.W. from the U-M and also was an adjunct faculty member in 1991–93.
She stresses the importance of keeping the Medical Center part of the University. “Because of the changes and uncertainty in the delivery of health care, the Medical Center needs to be integrated and remain a part of the University family while maintaining its high quality.”
In addition, she believes that the University must remain fiscally accessible and maintain the diversity of faculty and students. “We need to make sure that the U-M is a teaching university as well as a world-class research university.”
Taylor, vice president in charge of corporate and public relations for Detroit Edison, says that the Regents must establish a policy pertaining to executive salaries. Taylor also says that the University has a “fundamental, first-priority duty to the undergraduate system, and it’s important that it is accessible to as wide a range of people as possible.”
