$900,000 grant will benefit U-M AIDS treatment program

AIDS patients in southeastern Michigan will now have greater continuity of care and access to primary care service, thanks to a $900,000 grant from the Ryan White Fund to the Medical Center’s AIDS Program. The U-M was one of nine new sites across the country to win a grant from the Fund.
“The grant will improve the delivery of care to people with HIV and AIDS in this state,” says Powel Kazanjian, director of the AIDS Program. “It will help coordinate the many aspects of care—including access to specialists and promising new treatments—that are needed to provide first-rate AIDS care.”
With the funds, the U-M AIDS Program will create new primary care strategies to ensure that patients get rapid follow-up with subspecialists, good treatment compliance and smooth continuity of care between hospitals and community services.
“The grant will enable us to see a greater number of patients, who will all have access to our clinical trials,” says U-M AIDS social worker Hyatt Yu. “We will now have a strong primary care focus.”
The U-M AIDS Program currently cares for some 500 patients around the state with HIV and/or AIDS.
