First-year enrollment numbers hit record high
The University enrolled another record freshman class for fall 1996, according to figures released last Wednesday.
A total of 5,327 entering students enrolled at the U-M this fall, up from 5,266 in fall 1995. For the second year in a row— and only the second time in the University’s history—women (2,709) outnumbered men (2,618) among entering students.
Overall enrollment remained stable. A total of 23,590 undergraduate students enrolled, up only slightly from last year’s figure of 23,575. Graduate enrollment declined by 177, to 12,935. Total enrollment was 36,525, a decline of 162, or 0.4 percent.
