Regents approve building renovations at June meeting
The Regents approved these renovation projects:
The Lloyd and Winchell Houses in West Quadrangle, which have been used as faculty and departmental administrative offices since the late 1960s, will be renovated and returned to University Housing for student use, Executive Vice President Farris W. Womack said. The project, estimated at $1.8 million, will include substantial plumbing work in bathrooms, improvements to telephone infrastructure, upgrade of fire alarm system and installation of smoke detectors.
“On April 20, during a period of severe weather, a part of the metal roof of the Yost Ice Arena was damaged,” Womack said. “Fortunately, the old roof, over which the metal roof had been installed some 30 years ago, is in good shape in the area of the damage. The metal roof, however, must be repaired immediately to prevent further damage.” The repair work is estimated to cost $350,000.
The former Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house at the corner of Hill and State streets, which was purchased by the University, will be razed and the site will be developed as a temporary parking lot with about 65 spaces. The project is estimated to cost $300,000. “Our analysis indicated that to restore the building would cost considerably more than the building would be worth,” Womack said.
A $300,000 project to provide a handicapped access ramp to third level galleries in the Rackham Building. “This project will create a wheelchair ramp that will provide an accessible path, from the existing elevator stop at the landing between the third and fourth levels, to the galleries and administrative offices on the third level.”
