Michigan Radio reaches goal with most successful spring fundraiser

After only four days of on-air fundraising, Michigan Radio raised $164,500, making the Incredible Shrinking Week the most successful spring fund drive in the station’s history, beating its goal by $9,500. More than 650 first-time contributors, or “new members,” pledged support during the drive. Individual listener contributions account for 36 percent of Michigan Radio’s annual budget.

The on-air pledge “week” shrank by three days because of more than $60,000 contributed before April 11.

Individual listener contributions totaled $155,500, an additional $4,000 will be provided by corporations matching employee contributions and another $5,000 will be generated by local businesses participating in the Challenge Grant program. The program was created to help motivate listeners to make a pledge of financial support during certain times of the drive, when local businesses agreed to contribute a minimum of $500 each.

The U-M Press, the Ann Arbor News, Main Street News, Gill Industries, Parke-Davis, Bivouac and Bivouac Adventure Travel, Top Drawer, Freedom Technologies, Spectrum Printers, and Infosphere Asian Summary all participated in the Challenge Grant Program.

Michigan Radio, the University’s listener-supported broadcast service, can be heard on WUOM, 91.7 FM in Ann Arbor; WVGR, 104.1 FM in Grand Rapids; and WFUM, 91.1 FM in Flint.
