Provost names search committee for new Medical School dean

By Rebecca A. Doyle

Provost J. Bernard Machen has named 13 members to the committee that will search for the next dean of the Medical School.

Dean Giles G. Bole, who has served as dean since 1991, will return to the Medical School faculty July 1, 1997.

“Dr. Bole has been a loyal and dedicated member of the Medical School community and the University of Michigan,” Machen noted in his memo to the Regents in November 1995 when Bole announced his intention to leave the deanship. “It was with a sense of gratitude and regret that I accepted his decision to return to the faculty role at the conclusion of his term as dean. I am, however, grateful that he is willing to extend his appointment to allow us time to search for his successor.”

Machen charged the search committee with conducting a national search for a new dean and presenting him with an uLranked slate of final candidates in the winter 1997 term.

“I am enthusiastic about this search and look forward to the selection of an outstanding dean who will continue your tradition of excellence,” Machen told the committee.
