Mechanical Engineering Design Expo spawns new ideas

Mechanical engineering seniors Michael Remenak (left) and Terr Lorger (right) prepare to demonstrate their prototype Multi-Axis Hot-Wire Foam Cutter at last week’s Design Expo ’96 sponsored by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. 27 teams of undergraduates in the senior mechanical engineering design course (ME 450) spent the semester designing and building working prototypes of devices to solve problems submitted by industry sponsors or U-M faculty. Remenak, Lorber and fellow team member Jeffrey Marsh developed the foam cutter to assist engineers who needed a more accurate method of cutting polystyrene used in preliminary model-building.
