Fearon, Mulé will head up Cancer Genetics and Gene Therapy Program
From the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center
Eric R. Fearon and James J. Mulé will co-direct the U-M’s Comprehensive Cancer Center’s new Cancer Genetics and Gene Therapy program.
Fearon will be responsible for the genetics component of the program, which is aimed at understanding the alterations that lead to carcinogenesis and applying this knowledge to risk identification, pre-symptomatic diagnosis, improved chemotherapies and gene therapy. Fearon currently serves as the Cancer Center’s associate director for basic research and is the Emanual N. Maisel Professor of Oncology. He also was a member of the National Institutes of Health panel to study gene therapy research.
Formerly at the National Cancer Institute, Mule will be responsible for expanding and coordinating basic, translational and clinical research efforts in cancer gene therapy. An expert in immunotheraphy, Mule is the scientific director for the Cancer Center’s Bone Marrow Transplantation Program and a professor of surgery in Dentistry.
The Cancer Genetics and Gene Therapy program was proposed in the Cancer Center’s recent competing renewal application. The developing program received approval and an outstanding rating from the review committee.
