GEO, U-M reach tentative agreement

Negotiators for the University and the Graduate Employees Organization have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract for graduate teaching assistants.

The agreement was reached at approximately 1:30 a.m. last Thursday (April 11) following nearly 14 hours of mediation facilitated by Charles Jamerson, of the Michigan Employment Relations Commission. Last Wednesday marked the first day of talks involving a state mediator.

The GEO will now circulate ratification ballots among its members. Details of the tentative agreement will not be re leased until the contract is ratified.

If ratified, the three-year contract would take effect Sept. 1.

The U-M employs approximately 1,700 teaching assistants. Contract negotiations have been under way since October 1995.
