Energy saved in Green Lights program will be discussed
Andrew K. Berki, pollution prevention specialist in the Department of Occupational Safety and Environmental Health, will highlight some of the ways the University is conserving energy at 2 p.m. Wed. (April 10) in Room 1046, Dana Building.
In his presentation titled “Energy Conservation at the University of Michigan,” Berki will talk about the U-M’s involvement in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Lights Program and how the Power Plant’s co-generation syste m saves energy and reduces pollution.
The Housing Division and U-M Hospitals—both partners in the Green Lights Program—are replacing older light fixtures with energy-efficient fixtures that provide the same candlelight power. In 1994, U-M Hospitals won the EPA’s Large Hospital Partner of the Year Award for its energy conservation efforts.
Berki says the Power Plant’s co-generation process harnesses steam generated as a by-product and uses it for other purposes, resulting in an 80 percent efficient system compared to the 30 percent to 40 percent efficiency ratings of traditional steam power systems.
April 22 is Earth Day.
