U-M-Flint hosts conference on high school athletics
The Athletics and Beyond 1996 Conference, the first conference of its kind, will be held on the U-M-Flint campus May 3.
The conference is sponsored by the Michigan Department of Education Office of Equity in cooperation with the Martin Luther King Jr., Cesar Chavez, Rosa Parks College Day Programs at Michigan’s 1 5 public universities, and the Michigan High School Athletics Association (MHSAA).
This one-day educational program for athletic departments from Michigan’s school districts will provide information about the latest changes to NCAA rules and their impact on student athletes. The conference will help participants identify the many skills that athletes develop and help them translate those skills into academic and job skills.
Chip Anderson from the University of California, Los Angeles, will give the keynote address on his nationally recognized academics for athletes programs.
The conference will highlight athletic programs that have successfully prepared students for postsecondary education. Former National Football League player Larn Burnham will stress the necessity for student athletes to prepare for other options.
A conference goal is to identify ways in which Athletics and Beyond sponsors can assist coaches, athletic directors, counselors, parents and others who are working to ensure the success of student athletes. The results of this discussion will be forwarded to the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).
Also on the program are representatives from the MHSAA, NCAA and Counselors Association. Workshops will be held to help counselors understand new NCAA rules.
Registration will begin in the lobby of the U-M-Flint Theatre at 7:30 a.m. The conference runs 8 a.m.–4 p.m. A pre -conference session will begin at 8 a.m. for coaches.
